Calling all Passionate Saultites!

on March 16, 2013 in Uncategorized with Comments Off on Calling all Passionate Saultites! by

Ignite Sault Ste. Marie is hosting it’s seventh annual event at the Grand Theatre May 10, 2013, and we’re looking for fantastic stories from bright minds who want to share their insights with a captive audience.

What is Ignite?

“Enlighten Us — but make it quick!”

This is the slogan of Ignite, a revolutionary community event celebrating the passion and creativity of everyday people from all walks of life. Ignite events bring together artists, techies, entrepreneurs, academics, ponderers and others to share their ideas in quick, bite-sized presentations.

We’ve got some new faces to our crew, happy and eager to push the boundaries and bring to you another stupendous night of talks. We’re on the lookout for speakers, volunteers, and sponsors to get involved and make Ignite Sault 7 hotter and brighter than ever!

C’mon, help us feed the flame.

Nearly 200 people came to the last event, filling the Grand Theatre. The night was magical, the intimacy of the Grand and the big screen making it the perfect home for Ignite. We kicked off with an icebreaker that asked the audience to use tape and a deck of business cards to build something that represented the Sault in honour of its 100th anniversary. This was followed by a series of 14 inspiring bite-sized presentations that kept people talking well after the event was done. Ignite Karaoke made its return as well, with 3 brave souls doing their best to make a story out of random slides — there weren’t many takers this year, but the crowd loved the stories!

Call for Speakers:

Ignite presenters come from all corners of the community and from any walk of life. Topic choices are virtually limitless! Ignite Talks are 5 minutes long, consisting of 20 slides with 15 seconds per slide. Many past speakers presented for the first time at an Ignite event. At Ignite Sault, you’re in good company: everyone is rooting for you! It’s the perfect place to present.

Submit a topic. Deadline is Monday, April 15.
For more information about the event and to see past presentations, visit www.ignitesault.ca.

The Date:
Friday May 10th, 2013
6-10 PM @ The Grand Theatre

We ask that you please forward this message on to your friends and coworkers; we want the spark of Ignite to spread! Thank you.

What happened to Ignite Sault 6?

on May 22, 2012 in Uncategorized with Comments Off on What happened to Ignite Sault 6? by

Ignite Sault community, how are ya? Wondering what has happened to Ignite Sault? A lot has happened in the 6(!) months since Ignite Sault 5 wrapped up, some good, some disappointing.

In the good news department, the team behind Ignite Sault has been busy with other projects, and life in general. It was clear we didn’t have the capacity to put on an event before summer, making 2012 the first time we won’t have two Ignite events in a year. Disappointing? Certainly, and if you want to make Ignite 6 happen this fall, read more below. But wait, this was supposed to be good news, right?

Here it is. Two of the Ignite crew, Nathan Smith and Gerry Kirk are actively building an Ignite inspired community of creative thinkers and entrepreneurs. Gangplank Sault aims to be the home of connected individuals and small businesses creating an economy of innovation and creativity in the Sault. We envision a new economic engine comprised of collaboration and community. This model is already in use in the U.S., and rapidly growing.

Gangplank Sault is:

Get your Ignite fix over lunch

Every Wednesday at 12:00 Gangplank Sault serves up tasty knowledge nuggets, delivered with collaborative sauce, wrapped up in a fun networking environment. We find engaging topics, delivered by experts in the community to raise your game to the next level. These aren’t dull Powerpoint sessions. Come prepared to interact in a small setting. Check out these past and upcoming sessions, many delivered by Ignite alumni:

Keep informed on Gangplank events by email, Facebook or Twitter.

Ignite 5 videos, we barely knew ya

We regret that the video publisher appears to have lost the videos recorded at Ignite 5. This hurts us deeply, we love giving presenters a platform online to share their ideas. A small consolation is that one video draft was rescued, and that is now up on YouTube. Relive Emily Columbo’s talk on teh awesome that is Cooperatives.

Call for Ignite 6 volunteers

Want to be part of an exciting event with a proven track record? The organizing team is looking for a few new faces to take Ignite Sault to the next level. After 5 events, there is a solid plan for executing, making it easy for newbies to jump in and feel productive, not overwhelmed.

If you’d like to help out, email email@ignitesault.ca right away.

Sickness Manifesto talk

- Sickness Manifesto talk by Candice Esposito

After almost a year, Ignite Sault came back in fine form on February 10, with a near sell-out crowd (only 2 seats left in the balcony) listening to 11 speakers talk about their passions, everything ranging from a sickness manifesto to religious tolerance to advertising tips.

Looking for videos of the talks? Read on…

Marshmallow Mayhem

Marshmallow game

- Build tallest freestanding structure out of 20 spaghetti sticks, tape, string, one marshmallow on top

Every Ignite begins with a maker team competition of some sort that is both fun and challenging. It was awesome to watch about 30 tables battling each other to build the tallest structure.

Food Feast

Cupcakes and curry

- Cupcakes and curry

Our first time including food was a big hit, and you can count on us doing it again for Ignite Sault 5. Thanks to Jeannette from Jeannettes Custom Cakes and Neeta from Rasoi for the sweet and spicy treats, and for taking a chance on something new. Your passion shows in the work that you do.

Thanks to those who gave us feedback on the event (add your feedback here), which will make the next one even better. Most of the feedback affirmed what we’re already doing – great talks, interaction, food. The one area we heard to go after a perfect ’10’ score is you’d like to see talks dialed up to 11: more talks, more passion, entertaining value, with less promotional content. We’ve got some ideas to get there, but in the end it’s all about you out there willing to be a part of it. On that note, submit your talk now. 🙂

Sponsor Salute

Once again, we owe a lot to our sponsors, especially the Economic Development Corporation of Sault Ste. Marie for funding us in a major way, so we could focus on creating the best experience possible instead of scrounging for dollars. A number of organizations also helped out by donating time or prizes. If you find yourself in need of products or services which our sponsors provide, please show them some love:

Also thanks to Stephen Alexander for hosting the first ever after party @ Loplops.

Volunteer Cheer

We appreciate the time these people took out of their lives, and all the big and small things they did to make Ignite Sault 4 a success:

  • Lisa Vezeau-Allen – MC
  • AJ Armstrong and Mik Patton – photography
  • RJ Renner and Denise Soderberg – karaoke improv
  • Joanne Kovich – registration table
  • Jen Swenson – posters and other things creative

Want to help with Ignite Sault 5?

We’ll begin gearing up for the next event in early March. Contact us if you have an idea, or interest in helping.

Videos and Photos

Everyone wants to know when the videos will be up. We are hoping to have a couple up by the end of this week, and then publishing a few more each week. We’ll let you know each time there is something new to check out.

In the meantime, watch the archived live feed video, put together by SooNews which contains all of the talks.

Lastly, please remember to put your pictures up on Flickr, tag them with “ignitesault” and “ignitesault4” and add them to our photo group.

See you at Ignite Sault 5!
